UNHCR commemorates important dates in its history and 20 years of work in Croatia

Zagreb, 22 September 2011 - Commemorating 60 years from the formal adoption of the 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention and marking 50 years since the adoption of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, the UNHCR Representation in Croatia organized a multimedia exhibition of global and local efforts in caring for refugees and other displaced people. The event took place at Mestrovic Atelier in Zagreb and gathered high ranking government officials, members of the diplomatic and international community, NGO representatives and UNHCR partners.

PRESS STATEMENT
The United Nations (UN) in Croatia, like the UN everywhere, stands for human rights and tolerance. This includes respect for the rights of minorities of all kinds and equal protection before the law without any form of discrimination. The UN in Croatia is convinced that the violence and aggressive behavior demonstrated by protesters in Split on 11 June 2011 is not the true face of Croatia. It calls on all parties to show tolerance and respect for diversity during the Zagreb Pride events on 18 June 2011, and it encourages civil conduct in line with the values enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and reflected in Croatian law, which forbids all forms of discrimination, including on the basis of sexual orientation.

UNHCR High Commissioner’s Personal Envoy visits Croatia

The Belgium government funds UNHCR’s project in Croatia
Zagreb, 13 December 2010 - The United Nations High Commissioner Office for Refugees (UNHCR) Representation in Croatia is pleased to announce the reception of a contribution of 97,867 EUR from the Government of Belgium, through the Fund for Preventive Diplomacy. Funds received will help support the Phase II of UNHCR's project, called Bridging Gaps - Building Sustainable Communities in the Areas of Return in Croatia.

UNHCR welcomes Croatian – Serbian agreement on refugees
The UNHCR in Croatia welcomes the news on a political agreement to resolve the remaining refugee and return issues. The latest encouraging step, announced following meetings of the Serbian President Tadic with the Croatian President Josipovic, Croatian Prime Minister Kosor and other high level officials in Zagreb, will help the refugees to make a final decision on their future. It will facilitate the ending of displacement situation in the two countries and the region in a human and dignified manner. The solving of this almost 20 year long lasting refugee situation was also a goal of the 2008 UNHCR High Commissioner Initiative and his visit to the region in 2009.

UNHCR launches $41 million appeal to help victims of Pakistans flooding
Islamabad, 11 August 2010 - With over 160,000 people having so far received UNHCR emergency shelter and relief assistance across flood-affected areas of Pakistan, the agency appealed on Wednesday for $41 million to help meet the urgent needs of a further 560,000 people, amounting to 80,000 families.
