UNHCR participate at migration and asylum seminar in Rijeka

Rijeka, 22 January 2010 - UNHCR participated at a seminar under the ''Monitoring Police Conduct in the Field of Illegal Migrations and Asylum'' project, part of a MATRA (social transformation programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands) programme aimed at strengthening of Croatia's civil society in the field of migrations and asylum.

The project was launched in February 2009 and is conducted by the Ministry of Interior, Croatian Law Center in cooperation with the Dutch Council for Refugees and Croatian Red Cross. The aim of the Project is the improvement of border management in order to ensure that access to international protection is available to persons in need.

Within the scope of the seminar, the Head of UNHCR Croatia's Asylum Unit, Ms. Jasna Barberic, gave an introductory lecture on the basis of International Law on Protection of Refugees and Asylum Seekers.

One of the main operational goals of UNHCR in Croatia is to ensure inclusive respect for the principle of non-refoulment and access of asylum seekers to the territory and asylum procedure in the Republic of Croatia.
